人類對神靈的崇拜由來已久。所以,人們相信在西方昆侖山上和東海之外的蓬萊三島上,住著長生不死、逍遙自在的神仙。神仙們飲瓊漿玉露,食玉悄靈芝,住瓊樓玉宇,觀奇花異卉。美人仙姑、金童玉女,皆能天上地下地任意遨遊。

春秋戰國時期,曾有齊威王、宣王和燕昭王掀起的尋仙夢熱潮,到了秦漢,秦始皇和漢武帝的尋仙夢就更為浩大、更為浮華了。
秦始皇統一天下後第三年(公元前219年),在方士的鼓動下,開始巡遊郡縣,到山東泰山、琅琊等地封禪祭神,刻石記功。事畢,有齊人徐福等上書,言海中有三神山蓬萊、方丈、yingzhou,weishenxianjuzhuzhesuo,zainalikeyicaidaochangshengbusidexianyao,bingqingqinshihuangxietongnantongnvquqiuxian。qinshihuangyushilingxufudengrenzhaijie,lvsanqiantongnantongnvqianwangsanshenshanqiubusizhiyao,bingqianchengdiconglangyasongchuanduidaochengshantou,bingxiangzaichengshantouxiujianyizuozhitongxianshanyingzhoudedaqiao,weirihouxunqiubusizhiyaotigongbianli。juchuan,qinhuangdaojiuyinqinshihuangzengzaicizhuhoushenxianerdeming。
秦始皇後來又多次“使燕人盧生求羨門、高誓(皆為仙人)”,“使韓終、候公、石生求仙人不死之藥”。他還聽信方士之言,不再稱“聯”,而自謂“真人”。gengshendeshiweilerangxianrenjianglin,tahaixiujianleguimohongdadeefanggong,erbailineixinggongerbaiqishizuo,jieyiyongdaoxianglian,weiyiweizhang。tazijizeshenjujianchu,xingzongguimi。
公元前210年(nian),秦(qin)始(shi)皇(huang)最(zui)後(hou)一(yi)次(ci)出(chu)巡(xun),目(mu)的(de)仍(reng)是(shi)尋(xun)仙(xian)覓(mi)藥(yao)。他(ta)上(shang)茅(mao)山(shan),登(deng)琅(lang)琊(ya),浮(fu)東(dong)海(hai),但(dan)無(wu)論(lun)方(fang)士(shi)怎(zen)樣(yang)建(jian)言(yan)獻(xian)策(ce),怎(zen)樣(yang)挖(wa)空(kong)心(xin)思(si),神(shen)仙(xian)還(hai)是(shi)沒(mei)能(neng)找(zhao)到(dao),而(er)秦(qin)始(shi)皇(huang)也(ye)在(zai)返(fan)回(hui)鹹(xian)陽(yang)時(shi)的(de)路(lu)上(shang)死(si)於(yu)河(he)北(bei)沙(sha)丘(qiu)。
然而,秦始皇尋仙失敗的教訓,並未被後代統治者所吸取,據記載,西漢諸帝,少有不信奉神仙的。尤以那個“罷黜百家,獨尊儒術”的漢武帝劉徹骨子裏最謎戀。於是,便應了那句“上有所好,下必盛焉”之語,一個個的方士就接二連三地來到漢武帝的身邊,希望以此來博得名利富貴。
在漢武帝尋仙曆史上留下最濃厚一筆的,是一個叫李少君的行醫的方士。這個李少君,自稱有祭灶、驅鬼、辟穀、quelaodeyaofang,haishuozengdaohaishangqu,jiandaolexianrenanqisheng。tahaishuo,yaoxiangjiandaoxianren,bixuxianjisizaoshen,guishencaihuijianglin,danshacaikeyihuaweihuangjin,yongzhezhonghuangjinzuoyinshiqimin,jiukeyannianyishou,bingxianchengnengjiandaoshenxian。hanwudixinlelishaojundehua,yushiqinzijisizaoshen,paiqianfangshiruhaixunzhaoanqishengdexianren。kexijiuzaihanwudixingzhibobodeshihou,meizengxiangdaodeshilishaojunsile,raner,hanwudiquejiangqiqushirenweishi“化去”。
不(bu)久(jiu),齊(qi)地(di)方(fang)士(shi)少(shao)翁(weng)又(you)憑(ping)借(jie)著(zhe)鬼(gui)神(shen)方(fang)術(shu)得(de)到(dao)了(le)漢(han)武(wu)帝(di)的(de)信(xin)任(ren)。當(dang)時(shi),漢(han)武(wu)帝(di)的(de)寵(chong)妃(fei)王(wang)夫(fu)人(ren)剛(gang)剛(gang)去(qu)世(shi),漢(han)武(wu)帝(di)對(dui)其(qi)思(si)念(nian)不(bu)已(yi),少(shao)翁(weng)說(shuo)可(ke)以(yi)招(zhao)致(zhi)王(wang)夫(fu)人(ren)的(de)鬼(gui)魂(hun)。果(guo)然(ran),那(na)夜(ye)漢(han)武(wu)帝(di)坐(zuo)在(zai)帷(wei)帳(zhang)中(zhong),遠(yuan)遠(yuan)地(di)望(wang)見(jian)了(le)日(ri)思(si)夜(ye)想(xiang)的(de)王(wang)夫(fu)人(ren)。於(yu)是(shi),將(jiang)少(shao)翁(weng)封(feng)為(wei)文(wen)成(cheng)將(jiang)軍(jun)。得(de)寵(chong)的(de)少(shao)翁(weng)告(gao)訴(su)武(wu)帝(di),要(yao)見(jian)到(dao)神(shen)仙(xian),宮(gong)室(shi)被(bei)服(fu)及(ji)一(yi)切(qie)用(yong)具(ju)都(dou)應(ying)跟(gen)神(shen)仙(xian)一(yi)樣(yang)。然(ran)而(er),少(shao)翁(weng)用(yong)各(ge)式(shi)方(fang)式(shi)召(zhao)神(shen)一(yi)年(nian)多(duo),卻(que)不(bu)曾(zeng)見(jian)到(dao)天(tian)神(shen)降(jiang)臨(lin)。未(wei)免(mian)自(zi)己(ji)方(fang)術(shu)之(zhi)法(fa)力(li)敗(bai)露(lu),他(ta)並(bing)用(yong)帛(bo)書(shu)喂(wei)牛(niu),之(zhi)後(hou)告(gao)訴(su)武(wu)帝(di)說(shuo):“此牛腹中有奇。”於(yu)是(shi)殺(sha)牛(niu)而(er)得(de)帛(bo)書(shu)。但(dan)是(shi)武(wu)帝(di)突(tu)然(ran)發(fa)現(xian)帛(bo)書(shu)之(zhi)上(shang)的(de)字(zi)跡(ji)為(wei)少(shao)翁(weng)的(de),查(zha)問(wen)之(zhi)下(xia)得(de)知(zhi)果(guo)然(ran)是(shi)少(shao)翁(weng)偽(wei)造(zao),一(yi)怒(nu)之(zhi)下(xia)便(bian)將(jiang)少(shao)翁(weng)殺(sha)死(si)。但(dan)對(dui)外(wai)卻(que)隱(yin)瞞(man)其(qi)事(shi),以(yi)免(mian)招(zhao)人(ren)笑(xiao)話(hua)。
buguo,zhejianhuangmiuzhijideshiqingquebingmeiyouxiaojianwudidexunxianzhixinxin。zaizhezhihoushushinianjian,tahaofeiledaliangderenliwuli,xingjianshenciwushu,paiqumingshanhuozhehaishangxunxianqiuyaodefangshishichengqianshangwan,raner,queshilianshenxiandeyingzidoubuzengmijian。suoyi,daolewannian,wudizhongyuduifangshimendeguaiyuzhiyuchanshengleyanjuan。zaitalinsiqianshifachuzheyangdegankai:“向時愚惑,為方士所欺。天下豈有仙人?盡妖妄耳!”於是,下昭罷除各處侯神下降的方士。
秦皇、漢武的尋仙鬧劇,最終均以失敗而收場。但是,由於他們的影響,秦漢時期的神迷信活動得以盛行。
